Arbustos o árboles completamente glabros; ramas frecuentemente terminando en una espina endurecida. Hojas gruesamente membranáceas, lustrosas. Flores con el tubo floral coriáceo, grueso. 2 spp. E. del Mediterráneo hasta Asia, ampliamente cultivada en climas cálidos por su fruto, la granada.

El único especie en Mesoamérica es Punica granatum.
