Taxonomic notes: A recent molecular phylogenetic study has shown the paraphyly of the genus Morinda sensu L. and regconized four major linages of Morindeae: Appunia clade, Morinda clade (including Sarcopygme and the lectotype M. royoc), Coelospermum clade (containing Pogonolobus and Morinda reticulata), and Gynochthodes–Morinda clade.
