Annual to perennial, prostrate to erect, glabrous, glandular or densely villose herbs. Leaves sessile to petiolate, lanceolate to orbicular, entire or variously lobed,  opposite, upper cauline leaves usually alternate, basal leaves in rosette. Flowers pseudo-solitary with foliose bracts or in terminal or axillary racemes, pedicellate, zygomorphic. Calyx usually 4-lobed, lobes basally connate, sometimes lower 2 larger than the upper 2, sometimes 5-lobed, then 5th the uppermost lobe much smaller than the others, lobes entire or dentate. Corolla rotate, usually 4 unequal lobes, rarely 5-lobed, aestivation rhinanthoid, glandular hairy inside, bluish, purple, reddish or white, tube broader than long. Stamens 2, usually, dithecous exserted. Ovary 2-loculed, each cell with numerous or 1-2 ovules, laterally flattened; style 1; stigma capitate. Capsule usually smooth, laterally flattened or turgid, unlobed or bilobed. Seeds numerous or 1-2, weakly to strongly rugose, flat or excavate on both sides.

A genus of c. 450 species, distributed in the Northern Hemisphere and the tropical mountains, Australia and New Zealand. Represented in Pakistan by 31 species.

Excluded or Imperfectly known species

Veronica leucothrix Pennell Acad. Nat. Sci. Philadelphia Monogr. 5: 85. 1943.

Pennell (op. cit.) described this species on a single gathering. He himself considered it as an hybrid between V. hirta Pennell and V. koelzii Pennell as it shared the characters of both the taxa. The authors could not see any other material belonging to this taxon. Moreover judging from its description it appears to be a variant of V. hirta or V. koelzii or an hybrid which could not be established. Therefore it seems better to treat it as an imperfectly known taxon.

Fl.Per.: May-August.
