Description
|
Annual or perennial herbs, often prostrate or ascending; stems terete or angled, often branching at the base. Leaves opposite, at least below, mostly pubescent with simple, multicellular hairs or glandular hairs; petioles distinct or not. Inflo- rescences either in alternate-bracted elongate racemes or solitary flowers in the axils of terminal unmodified leaves. Flowers mostly small, the calyx divided nearly to the base, the 4(5) lobes mostly narrow, entire, often exceeding the flowers; corolla rotate or campanulate, blue or white, rarely yellow, somewhat lobed; stamens 2, the anthers exserted; style straight, the stigma capitate. Capsule flat- tened perpendicular to the septum, the carpels discoid or lenticular, marginally connate, loculicidal or sometimes septicidal; seeds numerous, variously orna- mented.

Veronica is a genus of over 200 species mainly of temperate parts of the Old World, but a few species are native to the Americas.

Note
|
They are frequently encoun- tered in temperate regions as weeds of fields, streets or roadsides. The species in Panama are distinguishable from one another by many conspicuous characters but elsewhere species are sometimes difficult to separate.
