Robust perennial herbs with thick roots. Stems rather short, scapose. Leaves large, often all radical, entire or repand-dentate or lobed, palmately nerved with 3 to many nerves at base; ochreae leathery-membranous. Inflorescences paniculate. Flowers usually hermaphrodite, pedicellate. Pedicels jointed. Perianth herbaceous, parted into 6 lobes, the outer 3 somewhat larger. Stamens 9, rarely less. Styles 3. Achene triquetrous, 3-winged. Embryo straight.
