Annotation: Genus described without species, based on plate from Hortus Malabaricus; Index Kewensis identified that species as Benkara galia and cited that as the type; Tirvengadum [Taxon 32(3): 436-441, 1983] accepted that typification without comment and updated it to the correct name Benkara malabarica. Genus sometimes assigned to Melastomataceae but Tirvengadum explained source of the confusion and correct classification in Rubiaceae.
