Type Specimens
  • LT: Berberis vulgaris L. Lectotype species chosen by A.S. Hitchcock. 1929. Berberis vulgaris in International Botanical Congress. Cambridge (England), 1930. Nomenclature. Proposals by British Botanists. 147, HMSO, London. The same species was designated as an earlier lectotype (1913) by N. L. Britton & A. Brown, Ill. Fl. N. U.S. ed. 2. 2: 127. 1913. However, American Code typifications such as these are regarded as having been made using a 'largely mechanical method of selection' (Art. 10.5 of the ICN), and *Ex. 7 explicitly indicates Britton & Brown as having worked in this way. Consequently, the typification is attributable to Hitchcock. -C. Jarvis (BM), 2015.
