Annuas, biennial or perennial herbs with simple or branched stems. Leaves  basal or cauline, simple, unlobed to 2–pinnatifid, alternate, rarely opposite, with entire to dentate margins. Capitula usually radiate, terminal, medium to large, solitary or in paniculiform or in corymbiform synflorescence. Involucre flat to reflexed, rarely hemispheric. Phyllaries 1–2 (–3)seriate, persistent. Receptacles conical to columnar; receptacular palea scarious,   ± enclosing cypselas. Ray florets few, sometimes absent, neuter; ligules golden to lemon–yellow, orange, or reddish, or bicolored. Disc florets numerous, yellow to purplish, often bicolored, tubular, bisexual, corolla 5–lobed.  Cypselas tetrahedral oblong to obpyramidate, sometimes compressed, glabrous or with few thick, multicellular trichomes. Pappus a small crown of minute scales or 2–4 small scales, sometimes absent.

A small genus of ca 23 species, distributed in North America. Represented in Pakistan by the following cultivated species.
