Notes:
Revisionary work for Africa by Lock (1999 a, b) has gone some way towards refining the taxonomy of Xyris in Madagascar, but the limits of X. capensis and X. humilis need more work, and this may eventually result in the recognition of more taxa, in addition to the 2 new endemic species that we have recently published. Lock (1999 in Kew Bull.) mentioned the probable occurence of X. angularis in Madagascar, on the basis of the sheet of Du Puy et al. M639 at P, material of X. congensis is also mounted on the sheet, and no other matching material has been found at P. It is therefore likely that the fragments of X. angularis are just misplaced material from another gathering presumably from Africa.
