General/Distribution: A genus of about 7 species distributed in Europe and the Mediterranean region to Iran and Caucasus. Represented in Pakistan by one cultivated species.

Erect shrub. Leaves scarious, minute. Cladodes green, persistent, parallel veined, oblong to oblong-lanceolate or elliptic. Flowers unisexual, borne on the upper or the lower surfaces of the cladodes. Perianth segments free, the inner 3 narrower. Male flower: anthers 3. Female flower: ovary stipitate, trilocular; ovules 2 in each locule. Berry fleshy, 1 (-2)-seeded.
