Stems branching, decumbent to ascending, rooting at the lower nodes. Leaves
monomorphic or the sporophylls sometimes somewhat reduced. Gemmae produced from
the cuplike tips of short, modified branches. Sporangia not in strobili,
occurring in zones along the stems. Gametophytes subterranean, mycorrhizal,
lacking chlorophyll, cylindrical. Two hundred to 300 species, nearly worldwide.
