Flowers solitary or in terminal dichasial to monochasial cymes or panicles. Sepals 5, quincuncial or rarely 4, decussate, glandular like the leaves. Petals 5(4), yellow, often tinged or veined red, deciduous or persistent. Stamens fascicles 5(4), antepetalous, free or variously united (often 2+2+1, forming `3'fascicles), deciduous or persistent; filaments slender, free or united; anthers dorsifixed, with an amber or black gland on the connective. Ovary 1-5-locular, with (2)3-5 placentae; styles (2)3-5, free or ± united, slender; ovules 2 to numerous on each placenta. Fruit a septicidal capsule or rarely tricoccoid or indehiscent. Hypericum oblongifolium
4.Sepals linear or narrowly oblong-lanceolate, spreading in bud. Flowers 1.5-3.5 cm in diam. Leaves shortly petiolate, ovate to lanceolate or elliptic-lanceolate
3.Styles 0.3-1.0 x ovary, outcurving. Petals broadly obovate to subcircular, 2-4 x stamens
5.Sepals acute to subacute at apex, ovate to lanceolate or narrowly elliptic, often foliaceous. Branches 4-lined at first, soon terete, not markedly frondose
5.Sepals rounded at apex, oblong or elliptic to obovate-spathulate, not foliaceous. Branches 4-angled or 4-lined at first, later 2-lined or (rarely) terete, usually + markedly frondose
