General/Distribution: A genus of 60 species, mostly Australian, widely distributed in the warmer parts of most countries.

Gregarious, dioecious shrubs. Young shoots viscid. Leaves exstipulate, simple, alternate. Flowers small, regular, in short terminal or axillary panicles. Sepals 3-5, imbricate or valvate. Petals absent. Stamens atta¬ched outside the disc. Disc annular in the female flower, absent in the male flower. Ovary sessile, 2-6 locular, 2 ovules in each locule. Fruit a septicidal capsule, 2-6 valved; valves winged at the back; seeds lenticular to sub-globose, 1-2 in each locule.
