Synonym Vilfa Adans. Fam. P1. 2:495. 1763.
Description Spikelets 1-flowered, the rachilla disarticulating above the glumes, not pro- longed beyond the floret (in our species); glumes equal, longer than the floret, acute or acuminate; lemma usually obtuse, thinner than the glumes, awned from the back or awnless, glabrous or more or less hairy on the callus; palea obsolete (in our species).
Note Slender perennials with flat or involute blades and open panicles of small spikelets.
Key a. Culms 10-40 cm. high, the blades all involute, or those of the culm flat but narrow, crowded toward the base in a dense cluster; lemma 2 mm. long, the callus sparsely hairy on the sides, the awn inserted about one-fourth above the base---- I. A. HOFFMANNI aa. Culms 50-60 cm. high; blades of the innovations involute-filiform, those of the culm flat, 1.5-3 mm. wide; lemma 1.5 mm. long, the callus glabrous, the awn inserted above the middle - - -- 2. A.
