This genus was previously circumscribed to include plants from southern and southeastern Africa and Madagascar; Kainulainen et al. 2009 separated the plants of Madagascar into Razafimandimbisonia, so Alberta is now restricted to Africa.
This genus is sometimes confused with Alibertia, which is a genus of the tribe Gardenieae that is restricted to the Neotropics.
