Description
|
Trees or shrubs. Inflorescences axillary, usually 1-flowered, rarely 3-flowered, singly or in fascicles of 2-5, at the tips of extremely abbreviate, minutely bracteate shoots; bracteoles very small, paired at the base of the ovary; flowers 5-merous. Sepals large and persistent, coriaceous-foliaceous, patent in the bud. Receptacle not produced above the ovary. Petals obovate, large. Stamens numerous, the anthers linear-oblong, dorsifixed near the base, dehiscing longitudinally. Ovary 3- to 6-celled, many-ovulate; placentas 2-lobed; ovules oblong. Berry subglobose, many-seeded. Seeds hippocrepiform, yellowish white, one side with a blackish spot, shining, finely reticulate, hard. Embryo incurved, the radicle elongate, the coty- ledons very small.
