7. Kochia Roth

(Blackwell et al., 1978)

About 30 species, North America, Europe, Asia, Africa.

The genus Kochia is closely related to Bassia All. and also to Cycloloma. All three genera have outgrowths of various sorts on the sepals. Some botanists have combined Kochia and Bassia under the latter name (Scott, 1978; Clemants, 1992; Judd and Ferguson, 1999). However, the phylogenetic relationships among these groups require more detailed study, and the three genera (only two of which occur in Missouri) are here maintained as separate.
