GROSSULARIACEAE Contributed by David Bogler

About 25 genera, 300–330 species, nearly worldwide.

Ribes traditionally was included in a broadly circumscribed Saxifragaceae (Steyermark, 1963). More recently, phylogenetic studies have indicated the woody members of the Saxifragaceae should be moved to several other families (Morgan and Soltis, 1993; Soltis and Soltis, 1997), with Ribes placed in the Grossulariaceae. The genus Itea has sometimes been included in the Grossulariaceae (Cronquist, 1991), but is treated in its own family, Iteaceae, in the present work (see that treatment for discussion).
