General/Distribution: An American family, with about 15 genera and 300 species, mainly in the western USA. Only 1 species wild in W.Pakistan.

Herbs, annual or perennial. Leaves alternate (or opposite), entire or pinnate, exstipulate. Flowers in terminal Cymes, bisexual, actinomorphic. Sepals 5, more or less connate. Corolla of 5 united petals, tubular, funnel-, bell-, or salver-shaped, lobes contorted. Stamens 5, epipetalous, free, included or exserted; Anthers 2-celled, opening lengthwise. Carpels 3; ovary superior, inserted on a disk, 3-locular, sessile; ovules 1 or more in each locule. Style 1, filiform, stigmas 3. Fruit a loculicidal capsule.
