Small floating ferns. Rhizome slender, branched, hairy. Leaves folded in bud, arranged in alternating whorls of 3, 2 of which are floating, green, entire, very hairy with prominent midrib; the third is submerged, divided into many root-like hairs, functioning as roots in absorption. Sori (sporocarps) heterosporous, born on the submerged leaves in mixed clusters on short stalks, their wall is thin and hairy; macrosori contain few megasporangia and microsori contain many microsporangia.
