Perennial, erect herbs. Stems to 70 cm, pubescent. Rhizomes thick. Leaves interruptedly imparipinnate. Basal rosette leaves crowded, linear-oblong to oblanceolate, 5-35 cm long, pilose to glabrescent on both surfaces. Leaflets 9-13 pairs (including alternate smaller pairs), suborbicular to elliptic, adnate to leaf axis by a broad base, margins crenately lobed, ciliate, apex obtuse. Petioles 1-4 cm, pilose, rarely glabrescent. Cauline leaves lanceolate to oblanceolate, 1.5-6 cm long with ovate, crenate stipules. Flowers 25-45 mm across. Pedicels pubescent. Epicalyx lobes lanceolate, 2-3 mm long, alternate with sepals. Sepals 5-8 mm x 3-5 mm, pubescent, triangular ovate, apex acute. Petals glabrous, yellow, 7-17 mm x 8-18 mm, +-clawed, broadly obovate, apex emarginate. Ovary hirsute. Stylodia terminal, persistent, glabrous or sparsely pilose at base. Stigma punctiform. Achenes many, hispid, ovoid.
