Erect, up to 20 cm tall, rarely caespitose perennial, with branched, stout rootstock bearing many sterile leaf-rosettes and flowering twigs. Stem unbranched, basally covered with remains of petioles. Rosette and basal cauline leaves on basally dilated and densely arachnoid or woolly hairy petioles, lamina narrowly linear-lanceolate to narrowly elliptic, (2-) 3 – 10 (-12) cm long, (5-) 7 – 12 mm wide, concolorous, pale green and densely stipitate glandular hairy on either side, coarsely sinuate-dentate on margins; middle and upper cauline leaves akin to lower ones but smaller in size. Capitula solitary, terminal, 2.5 – 3.5 cm across, on 10-20 cm long stems, surrounded by but not enveloped by upper most leaves. Involucre campanulate, 2.5 – 3.5 cm wide. Phyllaries 3-4-seriate, green, triangular-ovate to lanceolate, hairy; outer phyllaries 10 – 20 mm long, 2.5 – 3.5 mm wide, inner ones slightly shorter and almost linear. Receptacle without bristles. Corolla purplish-red, 15 – 17 (-25) mm long, tube 7 – 8 mm long, limb 8 – 9 mm long with 4 – 5 mm long lobes. Cypselas cylindrical, 4-angled, 3.5 – 5 mm long, glabrous, scaberulous, glandular apically. Pappus biserate, pale brown; outer bristles to 4 mm long, scabrid; inner bristles 12 – 14 mm long, plumose.
