Notes:
We maintain a broad concept for this sp, although on the basis of differences in infl type, leaf shape and size, and indument type, and presence/absence of indument on the achene we can recognise 4 groups (1 from mid-elevation Marojejy, 1 from high-elevation Marojejy, 1 from the the south-east and the last widespread group mainly from the central plateau and eastern escarpment). Three of these correspond approximately to vars recognized by Humbert in S. hypargyreus (the typical plant, var. alticolus and var. glabrescens), but further study is needed, and we suspect that they may be better regarded as 4 distinct species.
