Notes: This species is characterized by its robust habit, its stipules united around the stem into a tube with a medial group of glands on each interpetiolar stide, its rather large stiff-textured leaves, its paniculiform inflorescences with the flowers sessile in a number of small heads or glomerules, its somewhat small calyx and corolla, and its very large fruits. Rudgea grandifructa is generally similar to Rudgea colombiana and Rudgea coussareoides. Rudgea grandifructa was confused at one time in herbarium identifications with Rudgea carolina.
Distribution: Wet forest at 40-500 m along the Pacific coast of Colombia.
