Notes:
This species is characterized by its glabrescent leaves and stems, its relatively large stipules, its several-flowered inflorescences, its pedicellate flowers with short calyx lobes, its large, funnelform, bright yellow corollas, and its distribution in Jamaica. It is similar to Hamelia cuprea, which is also found in Jamaica; Elias (1976: p. 130) outlined in detail their differences, which are also noted in the key to the species of this genus. Hamelia ventricosa has the largest flowers of the genus. Hamelia papillosa is also found in Jamaica, and can be recognized by its scabrous vegetative organs.
