Notes:
This species is characterized by its laminar bilobed stipules, medium-sized thin-textured leaves, lax corymbiform inflorescences with small bracts, flower buds that are charactistically obconic and rather truncate at the top, rather short tubular-funnelform white to yellow corollas that are markedly bent and swollen at the base and curved in the tube, and ellipsoid weakly didymous fruits with abaxially smooth pyrenes. This species is rather commonly collected. Palicourea microcarpa belongs to Palicouera sensu lato, but is not included in any of the existing infrageneric classification; it is generally similar to and presumably related to Psychotria caerulea and several other species that are still included in Psychotria subg. Heteropsychotria pending further study of this group.
