Perennial, rarely annual, grass-like plants with stoloniferous rhizomes; stems scapiform, foliate chiefly at the base, the upper leaves usually reduced and distant; leaves narrow, sheathed at the base, the sheath open or closed; inflorescence term- inal, paniculate (in Panama), bracteate; flowers small, actinomorphic, perfect; perianth of 6 equal glumaceous tepals; stamens 6, hypogynous, free; anthers basifixed, 2-celled; pistil superior, 1- to 3-celled; stigmas 3; capsule loculicidal, seeds 3 to numerous.
