Notes:

This species is circumscribed here more narrowly than done by some previous authors (e.g., Burger & Taylor, 1993). It is characterized by a medium-sized habit; petiolate elliptic leaves; stipules with a fleshy appendage; subcapitate to congested, shortly pedunculate inflorescence;white fruits; and flattened pyrenes with a sharp abaxial ridge. It is similar to several other species, notably Notopleura amicitiae, Notopleura multinervia, Notopleura parvifolia, Notopleura valenzuela, and Notopleura costaricensis, and may include more than one species as circumscribed here.

Distribution: Set forest at about 1100-2500 m, Costa Rica to northwestern Colombia.
