Annotation: Artanthe geniculata sensu Grisebach, 1866, non Miq., 1843. The holotype of this name was later cited in the same work as the holotype of Piper rigidum, published simultaneously without any mention of this other name. These seem to represent two valid alternative but synonymous names, Art. 36.3. These names were treated as separate species by Saralegui Boza, 2004, and Acevedo-Rodriguez & Strong, 2012, but this taxonomic conclusion does not seem supported and these names do not seem to have been synonymized with one of them chosen as accepted.
