Notes:
CMT, X 2019: A key to the Indian Ocean species (as Mussaenda) was published by Wernham, J. Bot. 52: 64-65, 1914; three species were described subsequently, B. decaryi, B. latisepala, and B. perrieri. The genus Bremeria was studied by Andriambololonera, Razafimandimbison, & Davis, but most of their taxonomic results are ined. and apparently they have not det specimens (or their dets are not compiled in Tropicos). Specimens are det here according to Wernham, who separated species based in large part on pubescence type and distribution, and on degree of development of the pedicels and calyx lobes (variously in flower or the fruit); several of his taxa now appear to be more variable than he knew in these characters (e.g., B. scabridor, Bridson, Davis, in sched.), and some of his taxonomic distinctions result in broadly distributed groups that appear to include more than one species. Many of the species of Bremeria appear to have nocturnal flowers, which are notable for their size variation within Rubiaceae species, also the calyx limbs appear to enlarge in fruit in some of the species.
