Grows in sandy mountain passes along streams, on screes and  rocky well-drained slopes of subalpine and alpine zone from 4000 to 4600 m.

Perennial, 2 – 6 cm tall herb, almost stemless or with  short erect, densely tomentose stem. Rootstock simple or branched, with petiolar remains of previous years. Leaves in rosette, on upto 2 cm long petioles, broadly linear to narrowly ovate‒elliptic, 2 – 8.5 cm long, (0.3‒) 0.5 – 2.0 cm wide, lyrate to runcinate, shallowly pinnatifid to ± pinnatipartite or simple with sinuate‒dentate margins, more or less concolorous, grayish-green to grayish white, densely arachnoid hairy adaxially, lateral lobes 2-5 pairs, triangular, apically acute-acuminate, terminal lobes narrowly triangular, acuminate to caudate. Capitula solitary, in centre of leaf rosette or at apices of stem. Involucre campanulate, 1 – 2 cm in diameter.  Phyllaries 3‒6‒seriate, purplish or reddish-purple, sparsely to densely hairy, acuminate, outermost narrowly ovate-triangular, 11 – 12 mm long, 3 – 4 mm wide, median phyllaries narrowly ovate-elliptic, 12 – 17 mm long, 3 – 4 mm wide, innermost narrowly oblong-elliptic, 15 – 20 mm long, 1.5 – 3 mm wide. Corolla purplish-red, 9 – 18 mm long, tube 5 – 12 mm long, limb 4 – 6 mm long. Cypselas brown, cylindric, 2.5 – 4 mm long, ribbed, glabrous. Pappus pale-brown, outer bristles to 4 mm long, scabrid, inner bristles 14 – 15 mm long.
