Although this is a generally recognized family, it does not occur in Mesoameroca. Itea virginica L. (Iteaceae) was mistakingly included as a synonym of Cyrilla racemiflora (Cyrillaceae) by Cirilo Nelson in his Catálogo de las Plantas Vasculares de Honduras p. 366 (2008).
