Plants perennial, the culms long and weak, often reclining on shrubs or scandent to a height of 3 m. or more; leaves 2-7 mm. wide, stiff, very scabrous on the margins; panicles small, terminal and axillary, conspicuously bracteate, purplish or castaneous; hypogynium flat, subentire, the margin reflexed, un- dulate; achene 2-4 mm. long, globose-ovoid, white, smooth, shining, usually minutely white-pubescent, as long as the scales or nearly so.

Wet thickets and savannas, West Indies and Mexico to Bolivia.
