Description

Plants in small dense tufts, the culms slender, 1-5 dm. high; leaves basal, pilose, usually much shorter than the culms, 1-2 mm. wide; heads globose, about 1 cm. in diameter, brownish, subtended by about 4 short bracts; achene obovoid, black, 1-1.5 mm. long, with a broad membranous silvery wing 2 mm. broad with involute margins; bristles 4-5, equaling or exceeding the achene.

Dry to wet grasslands; Honduras, Panama, and the West Indies to southern Brazil.
