Tufted perennial, 30-70 cm. Rhizome with grey, soon fibrous scales. Stem sharply to obtusely trigonous, smooth or occasionally scabrous above. Leaves c. 1/4 of stem length; sheaths 20-60 mm, yellowish to grey, margin of scarious side slightly concave; ligule c. 0.3 mm, shallowly arched; blades 2.5-6 mm wide, flat or folded, keeled, margins and keel scabrous towards apex. Inflorescence of 1-4 male and 1-4 female spikes, both frequently androgynous. Lowest bracts long, mostly folded, sheath up to 40 mm. Male spikes 8-20 x 2-6 mm, fusiform or club-shaped, brown, frequently 2-4 tightly imbricating, esp. when pure male; male glumes 4.2-5.8 x 1.3-1.7 mm, obovate, brown to reddish brown, margins scarious, apex usually finely ciliate. Female spikes 10-20 x 4-6 mm, fusiform or ellipsoid, basal part lax, peduncles filiform, up to 10 cm; female glumes 4.3-5.7 x 2-2.3 mm, elliptic, dark reddish brown, margins scarious, mid-nerve scabrous, sometimes reaching obtuse apex; utricles 4.1-5.7 x 1-1.8 mm, fusiform, trigonous, plano-convex, dark reddish brown, scabrous, occasionally hispid, beak 1.5-2.3 mm, reddish brown, scabrous, ostiole oblique or bidentate, margin scarious. Stigmas 3. Nut 2.3-3 x 1.1-1.4 mm, including c. 0.3 mm style base and c. 0.3 mm stipe, ellipsoid, trigonous, brown to dark grey-brown, finely reticulate with papilla in each areole.
