3a. var. drummondii (Hook. & Arn. ex Nutt.) Sarg.

A. rubrum f. rotundata Sarg.

Leaf blades with the undersurfaces usually strongly whitened and also densely and persistently hairy at maturity, at least along the main veins. Fruits with the wings 2–3(–4) cm long. 2n=78. March–April.

Uncommon in the Mississippi Lowlands Division west locally to Ripley and Wayne Counties (southeastern U.S. west to Missouri and Texas). Swamps, bottomland forests, and sinkhole ponds.
