Annotation:
Although his name was intended to apply to plants now called F. profunda, his species was illustrated by Michaux as Fraxinus tomentosa Marshall, but his accompanying description applies to Fraxinus pennsylvanica Marshall, and he cited Fraxinus pubescens Lamarck (which is the same as F. pennsylvanica Marshall) as a synonym.
