60. Diaperia Nutt.
Three species,
southwestern U.S. and
adjacent Mexico.
The generic
classification of the so-called Filago group is still unsettled and the
small segregate Diaperia has been resurrected only recently. Diaperia
often has been included in Evax Gaertn. (Cronquist, 1980), which often
has been included in Filago L. (Anderberg, 1991, 1994; Arriagada, 1998).
Morefield (1992, 2004) took a cladistic approach and attempted to recognize a
number of smaller, monophyletic groups as genera. According to his studies, the
alternative to splitting the subtribe Filagininae Bentham & Hook. f. into
numerous small genera that are very difficult to circumscribe morphologically
is to combine virtually the entire group into a single, morphologically
heterogeneous Filago, an approach that Morefield (1992) considered
relatively uninformative.
