This subspecies was treated by Robbrecht (1979) as Tricalysia junodii var. junodii, but Tosh et al. (2009) revised the taxonomy of these plants to treat them within the circumscription of Empogona kirkii, and to consider these plants to be a subspecies rather than a variety.
