Annotation: With regard to the authorship of the name, see Daniel (1997; Contr. Michigan Univ. Herb. 21: 164); it is often cited as a combination based on Hemisandra aurantiaca Scheidw., but should instead be regarded as a new taxon name. Lindley cites "Hesemasandra aurantiaca, Hort." in synonymy, and states that the plant on which his description was based "was exhibited...under the title of Hesemasandra aurantiaca, a name not to be found in any Botanical books in our possession. It is probably some error, and the word may have been Hemiandra...(etc.)." Clearly, Lindley was ignorant of Scheidweiler's prior name, and in his mind was not citing a basionym, merely documenting the perplexing identification of some horticulturist ("Mr. Henderson") recorded on a label in a pot. Lindley obviously believed that he was describing a new species; it was not his intent to be making a new combination based on a prior name. Despite the fact that they share an epithet (and presumably apply to the same species), the two names must be considered heterotypic: Aphelandra aurantiaca Lindl. based on a plant cultivated in England, Hemisandra aurantiaca Scheidw. on a plant cultivated at the botanical garden in Brussels. Scheidweiler's name has priority, but cannot be transferred to Aphelandra because its epithet is preoccupied in that genus by Lindley's name.
