Description
|
Large, caespitose, epiphytic herbs up to a meter or more tall when in flower. Pseudobulbs 18-30 cm. long and 2-3 cm. broad, apparently somewhat ancipitous, largest toward the top, bifoliate. Leaves 20-35 cm. long and 4-6.5 cm. broad, lanceolate or elliptic, obtuse, coriaceous. Inflorescence a long-pedunculate, several- to many-flowered raceme up to 75 cm. or more long; bracts up to 6 cm. long, linear to linear-lanceolate; flowers brown or maroon with a purple lip, medium- sized, long-pedunculate. Sepals and petals 2.5-5.5 cm. long, undulated, linear or spatulate, obtuse or acutish. Lip 1.3-2 cm. long and 1-1.3 cm. broad, 3-lobed, with 3 or more inconspicuous longitudinal carinae; lateral lobes rounded, obtuse, appressed to the column; terminal lobe orbicular-ovate, acute, recurved. Costa Rica, Panama and possibly Venezuela.

Note
|
Laelia tibicinis (Batem.) L. Wms., in Darwiniana 5:77. 1941, has been reported from Panama but we have seen no specimens nor authentic record of it from the country.
