Notes:
This species is characterized by its leaves with the distinctive venation of Sect. Tricephalium, rounded stipules that are entire to bidenticulate, its inflorescences with a single capitate, rather robust head that is pedunculate and enclosed by partially to fully fused involucral bracts, short calyx limbs, funnelform corollas that are narrowed at the top, and somewhat large fruits. This corolla form and arrangement of anthers and stigmas in this species are unusual, with the anthers and stigmas both included deeply within the corolla in the apparent long-styled form or the flowers perhaps isostylous. Little information is available about the flower biology of Palicourea flaviflora or the very similar species Palicourea lewisiorum. The inflorescences changed markedly as they develop, from cylindical and cream to pale yellow in flower to stout and bright purple to violet in fruit. Palicourea flaviflora is also similar to Palicourea grandiceps. Palicourea flaviflora was previously circumscribed to include the plants separated here in Palicourea lewisiorum.
