Perennial, viscid  herbs. Rootstock a branched caudex, usually surrounded above by marcescent leaves. Stem erect, 10–45 cm tall, thick, unbranched, pubescent–glandular or villous, leafy, almost continuous upto the base of capitulum. Leaves discolorous, pubescent – densely villous. Basal leaves almost sessile, oblanceolate – spathulate, acute – obtuse, entire, narrowed towards base, 5–2 (–15) cm long, 0.1 – 1.5 (–2) cm wide, cauline leaves sessile, lanceolate – elliptic, acute, semiamplexicaul, villous, 2.5–4 (–6) cm long, 0.8 – 1.5 (–2) cm wide, upper most similar to lower ones but smaller, 1–2.5 cm long, 0.2–0.5 cm wide, overlapping and surrounding  capitulum. Capitula terminal, solitary, 2–3.5 (–4.5) cm across, peduncles leafy. Involucre 2 – 2.5 (–3) cm in diameter, densely villose, mostly at the base, surrounded by 3–4, lanceolate, acuminate leafy bracts. Phyllaries 2–seriate, imbricate, lanceolate, longer than disc florets, acuminate, outer ones  10–12 mm long, 0.8 – 1.2 mm wide, inner 14–15 mm long, 0.5 – 0.8 mm wide. Receptacle convex, alveolate. Ray florets bluish or bluish mauve above, white below, 2 – 3 (–4) cm  long, filiform–linear, tube ca 3 mm long. Disc florets yellow or orange, 5–6 mm long, tube ca 2 mm long, limb 3–4 mm long including 0.5–1 mm long, broadly triangular lobes. Cypselas 2.5–4 mm long, ca 1.2 mm wide, brown – dark brown, oblong, with white soft long hairs, glandular. Pappus biseriate, outer bristles 1 – 2.5 mm long, white, palaceous, inner 6–7 mm long, pale brown–buff, barbellate.
