Distribution:

Armenia, Azerbaijan?, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Nachichevan, Tadzhikistan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Comment/Acknowledgements:

It is a submontane species, grows on stony and gravelly slopes, in crevices of limestone rocks with sandy-loam soils between  1200 – 3000 m.

Perennial herbs with thick roots. Stem 15 – 30  (45) cm tall, sulcate, paniculately branched above, glabrous to puberlous.Leaves simple, shortly petiolate-dilated at the base, basal often rosulate, elliptical-oblong-obovate in outline, runcinate-pinnatipartite, undivided, obtuse, sinuate-dentate or somewhat incised, 15 – 30  (-40) x 4 – 10  cm, sparsely pilose; upper cauline leaves sessile, elliptic-lanceolate, 3 – 7  x 0.5 – 2  cm, semi-amplexicaul. Synflorescence a panicle. Capitula many, 1.5 – 2.5  x c. 1.5 cm, erect, campanulate, 25-30 florets per capitulum; peduncles  thick, unequal, bracteolate. Involucre more or less cylindrical, 15 – 16 mm long.  Phyllaries 5-6-seriate, acute; outermost 5 – 7  x 5 – 6  mm, ovate-triangular, finely appressed hairy; middle one 9 – 12  x 3 – 4  mm, lanceolate-broad linear; innermost  15 – 18  x 2 – 2.5  mm, linear-oblong. Florets 25 – 30 in each capitulum, yellow. Cypselas 4 – 5  x 2.5 – 3  mm with beak, dull-dark brown, oval- broadly elliptic, scabrid, much compressed, with 1-middle prominent rib on each side and 2 lateral more or less distinct ribs, apically attenuate into 3 – 4  mm long, concolorous beak. Pappus biseriate, outer short, inner 9 – 10  mm long, white.
