Notes:
This species is characterized by its rather robust habit, leaves with the tertiary venation areolate on the lower surface, robust obtuse generally acuminate stipules 11-35 mm, well developed peduncles, branched paniculiform inflorescences with small bracts, short lobed calyx limbs, somewhat well developed corollas, fruits that do not become stipitate, deeply ruminate endosperm, and habitat in montane areas. The ruminate endosperm appears to be unusual in Neotropical Rubiaceae, but this group has not been surveyed in detail for this feature. Psychotria cochabambana is similar to Psychotria sylvivaga, which has the tertiary venation ont evident on the lower surface and is found in Central America and the northwestern Andes, and to Psychotria davidsmithiana, which has continuous (i.e., non-ruminate) endosperm.
