Notes:
This species is characterized by its medium-sized leaves, reduced laminar stipules, pyramidal to corymbiform inflorescences with the flowers separated in dichasial groups, well developed white corollas, and fruits with thin-walled pyrenes. The identity of this species has been unclear for some time, in large part because it has not been well documented until recently. It was long confused with Coussarea, based on its long white nocturnal corollas, reduced stipules, and thin-walled pyrenes that are often solitary in the fruits due apparently to development of only one seed. It appears to belong to a group of Palicourea species with adaptations for nocturnal pollination (Taylor et al., 2010), and is generally similar in particular to Palicourea alajuelensis, Palicourea tutensis, and Palicourea pereziana.
