This species has the largest flowers of the genus, 15-20 mm long, along with relatively small leaves, even for Chiococca. Chiococca grandiflora was originally described from plants in two populations of northern and northwestern Mexico, in Sonora and Sinaloa. Subsequently Torres-Montúfar et al. (2023) reviewed this species and seprated the type specimen from Sonora and the paratype specimens from Sinaloa. They found the type does represent a distinct species of Chiococca with white flowers, and the paratype specimens represent a distinct species, Coutaportla lorenceana, with pink flowers.
In general aspect Chiococca grandiflora is similar to Syringantha.
