Occurs between 3000-4500 m in alpine meadows, near water channels and open grassy areas.

A small, up to 20 cm tall herb. Leaves lobed, lobes patent or runcinate, denticulate, acute. Scapes ± as long as leaves, hairy above. Capitula c. 1.5 cm across. Involucre dark-green, drying black; outer phyllaries loosely appressed, linear-lanceolate to lanceolate, callose; inner ones linear, callose. Ligules orange-yellow, peripheral ones with dark stripes outside. Anthers polliniferous. Styles and stigmas drying black. Cypselas stramineous to brown, 4 – 4.5  mm long, weekly spiulose above; cone 1.5 – 2  mm long, abruptly formed; beak 6 – 7  mm long; pappus 6 – 7  mm long, dull white.
