Taxon Profile     (Last Modified On 11/30/2016)
Description: Plants (50–)100–200(–400) mm high. Corm ovoid, 6–15 mm diam., oblique with crescent-shaped basal ridge, tunics woody, with clusters of converging fibrils on ridge. Stem aerial, exserted up to 300 mm, branching near apex, glabrous or cilate on angles in upper part. Leaves 2 to 5, lower 1 basal, linear and ± I-shaped in section, ± broadly 4-grooved, 1–2 mm diam., marginal ribs reduced and rounded, without secondary veins, median ribs flange-like or narrowly winged, curving over partially obscuring lateral ribs, often pubescent or villous on margins, cauline leaves clustered near top of stem. Peduncles up to 3, terete, glabrous or ciliolate on angles, spreading in fruit; outer bracts green with narrow colourless membranous margins, 12–20 mm long, striate (5 to 7 veins/mm), inner bracts with wide, reddish or brown-flecked membranous margins. Flowers yellow, orange or pink to purple, with small yellow cup with V-shaped marks in base, outer tepals greenish or reddish or darkly veined or feathered on reverse; perianth tube funnel-shaped, 3–5 mm long; tepals oblanceolate, 15–32 × 6–10 mm. Filaments ± included in cup, 4–8 mm long, minutely pilose basally, yellow; anthers 4–7 mm long, apically connate when young, yellow. Style dividing near anther apices. Capsules oblong, ± 10 mm long. Flowering time: (late July) Aug.–Oct.
Country: South Africa
South African Province: Eastern Cape, Western Cape
Distribution and ecology: extending along the forelands and coastal mountains, from the Riviersonderend Mtns in Western Cape eastward to Humansdorp in Eastern Cape; on sandy or gravelly flats and slopes in fynbos or transitional fynbos.
Diagnosis: the only species in the genus that includes plants with yellow as well as pink flowers, Romulea dichotoma is recognized by its characteristic basal leaf, the median ribs reduced and much smaller than the marginal ones and the blade thus almost I-shaped in section. The median ribs are flange-shaped or winged and curve over and partially conceal the median veins, which are rounded in section and lacking secondary veins (visible only under the microscope). Plants with pale orange flowers can be confused with R. jugicola from the inland mountains unless the leaves are examined carefully. That species has terete leaves with all four ribs subequal in size and form. Similarly, plants at the east of the range with pale flowers may be confused with R. longipes but that species has two basal leaves.
