Taxon Profile     (Last Modified On 9/7/2016)
Description : Plants 80–200(–300) mm high. Corm globose, asymmetric with an obliquely flattened side extending shortly downward, 5–10 mm diam.; tunics concentric, dark brown, hard and woody, fragmenting irregularly into sections. Stem simple or 1- or 2-branched either from base or from upper nodes. Leaves 5 to several, at least lower 3 or 4 basal, erect to falcate, 3–6 mm wide, lanceolate to sword-shaped, typically short and seldom > 1/3 as long as stem, upper leaves cauline, progressively smaller, uppermost often entirely sheathing. Spike 2–5-flowered; bracts 9–12(–15) mm long, evidently green, becoming dry-membranous above, often reddish along margins, inner usually slightly shorter than outer. Flowers actinomorphic, rotate, pale pink to purple, rarely white; perianth tube ± 5 mm long, cylindric, included in bracts; tepals obovate, 13–17 × 6–7 mm. Filaments equal, 4–5 mm long; anthers 4–6 mm long; pollen yellow. Style dividing opposite apex of anthers, branches 3–4 mm long. Capsules 7–9 mm long, narrowly ovoid. Chromosome number 2n = 26. Flowering time: September to early November.
Country : South Africa
South African Province : Western Cape
Distribution and ecology : local in southern Western Cape along the southern slopes and foot of the Langeberg between Swellendam and Riversdale; on clay or clay loam slopes and flats.
Diagnosis : distinguished by its 5–7, characteristically short, lanceolate leaves, Geissorhiza foliosa has relatively large pink to purple flowers with tepals 13–17 mm long and a short perianth tube ± 5 m long. It is perhaps most easily confused with G. inconspicua but this species has smaller, violet to purple or white flowers, with smaller tepals mostly 8–11 mm long and longer leaves reaching at least to the base of the spike.
